The Boyd County Fair began 20 years ago as all things…with the dream of a few…a vision for the future…and the sacrifice of many volunteers. The fair had very humble beginnings utilizing a vacant field across from Boyd County High School, to the back parking lot of the former Cedar Knoll Galleria, and finally the dream became a full reality 10 years ago when we were able to move to our current fairgrounds.

The Boyd County Fairgrounds are located just off old US Route 60 West, about one mile from the 181 Exit of I-64 in Coalton, Kentucky. Our multipurpose building, which we refer to as our “Building of Dreams”, is now eight years old and has truly proven to be as versatile as we had first envisioned. The building houses a 12,500 square foot air-conditioned auditorium, a fully functional commercial kitchen, as well as offices, restrooms, and shower facilities.
The Boyd County Cooperative Extension Service opened their multi-purpose building, The Franks Community Building, in 2007. This houses all of the 4-H exhibits and projects. The addition of this new building has allowed the “Building of Dreams” to offer an expanded space for additional vendors, exhibits and entertainment. We commend all the Extension Office and their staff for their efforts to build the County Fair Programs.

The dream that began over 20 years ago continues to evolve and become a reality today. The vision of having a place for the youth of Boyd County to learn responsibility, pride, confidence, and showcase their accomplishments is here now. The dream of a place for families to step back in time, when the pace was a little slower and share a week of experiences and memories that will last a lifetime has arrived. Let us continue to develop the dream and feed the vision that will shape the futures of our children for generations to come.
The Boyd County Cooperative Extension Office and the Boyd County Fair Board began a relationship of working together for the future development of the fairgrounds to met the needs of the youth of Boyd County.  Shortly after the multipurpose building was completed a horse arena and horse barn was built as a place for the members of the Boyd County 4-H Club to showcase their talents and skills.  In 2006 two livestock barns were built in the horse arena area.  Due to a continued growth in the youth livestock program two additional barns were built in 2008 as well as a covered walkway between the original barns and a covered show ring.
